The best strategy games you can actually play one-handed

April 7, 2026 · Katrin Vogel

Mobile strategy has a design problem: too many games assume you have two hands and a quiet room. In reality most sessions happen standing on a bus.

So I've started scoring games partly on how well they work one-handed. Big buttons, forgiving inputs and pausable action all matter more than raw depth when you're holding a rail.

Tower defence tends to win here because you can pause and plan. Turn-based games do well too. Anything that needs fast dragging across the whole screen tends to fail the train test.

If a developer is reading this: pause buttons and confirm dialogs are your friends. Nothing ruins a commute like losing a run to a misread tap.
