Why fair difficulty beats fake difficulty every time

Why fair difficulty beats fake difficulty every time

A hard game tells you why you lost. A cheap game just takes your run and shrugs. That gap is the difference between a title I recommend and one I delete.

Ironhold Siege is a good example of fair difficulty. When a wave breaks through, I can trace it back to a placement mistake. That makes losing feel like a lesson, not a punishment.

The worst offenders hide their rules. Sudden spikes, unclear enemy stats, timers you couldn't have known about — these aren't challenge, they're padding.

When you're testing a strategy game, ask yourself one question after a loss: do I know what I'd change? If the answer is yes, the game is doing its job.
